“Atra Bilis” is Latin for Black Bile. In medieval medicine, black bile was an illness of one of the four humors, which was a theory that health and personality are determined by the balance of four different bodily fluids. An excess of black bile was thought to be the cause of gloom, deep sadness, and melancholy.
